Guided Tour: Import / Export Operations
MPSuperShape can also export shapes and pushpins to a number of formats. These include GML, KML, Virtual Earth HTML, and Google Maps KML. MPSuperShape can also import shapes and pushpins from GML, KML, ESRI ArcInfo SHP files, and MapInfo MIF files. Here we use GML to copy shapes between MapPoint maps.
GML is a rich format, and MapPoint is only capable of supporting a limited range of GML features. MPSuperShape successfully implements a subset of GML, allowing MapPoint pushpins and shapes to be mapped to GML features.
GML is based on XML, so it is a convenient vehicle for MapPoint shape analysis by third party applications. It is also a convenient method of modifying exisitng shapes, or entering custom shapes from an external file into MapPoint.
The GML import/export operations also allow shapes to be copied between MapPoint maps. Here, a third shape (red) has been imported into the depot drive time example (see the Join Shapes page of the guided tour). This extra shape originated in a different MapPoint map file, and was exported using MPSuperShape. The GML shape can be stored for future reuse, allowing it to be imported into multiple map files at a future date.
